St. Peter

St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums

We are about a 10-minute walk from St. Peter's Square. St. Peter's Basilica can be reached from anywhere in the city by taking metro line A towards Battistini and getting off at the Ottaviano stop. Walking along Via Ottaviano towards Piazza Risorgimento, you will see the walls of Vatican City in front of you..

An interesting fact: Vatican City, where St. Peter's Basilica is located, is a sovereign state in all respects, with its own currency and independent postal service, complete with dedicated stamps and postmarks. Stamps, postcards with Vatican postmarks, and official coins are highly sought after by collectors and also make original souvenirs to buy or give as gifts.

Inside St. Peter's Basilica are authentic masterpieces: the majestic dome designed by Michelangelo, the bronze canopy, and the funeral monument of Pope Urban VIII, both created by Bernini.

You can also admire Michelangelo's famous Pietà, the monument to Clement XIII sculpted by Canova, and the mosaic of the Navicella attributed to Giotto. A specific section of the Basilica also houses the tombs of the Popes, including that of Pope John Paul II, one of the most visited by pilgrims and tourists.

Not far from the Basilica, the Vatican Museums, which house the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican's vast art collections, are also well worth a visit.
